Horatio Entwhistle has loved science since he was very young. In fact when he was five years old he blew up his bedroom for the first time. Now he has a shed in the back garden where he can practice his experiments without burning down the house and where he can work on his latest invention, Stupendous Glue.

Horatio loves his absent-minded parents and is happy they are often so engrossed in their work that they forget to check on what he is doing. He is a bit worried though that his mother’s terrible cooking might poison them all one day.

Horatio seems to find mystery and adventure even when he’s not looking. He also doesn’t seem able to go for more than a few weeks without breaking his glasses or upsetting, Snowball, the neighbour’s cat. He sometimes runs into danger without thinking and gets impatient at times. He feels protective of Wheels even though his friend is slightly older than he is.

Aside from science, Horatio’s favourite activity is to spend time with his friends.

Ming is one of Horatio’s closest friends. She has a judo black belt and her many talents include being a lock-picker extraordinaire. Her parents are very protective and this drives Ming crazy. She is sensible and often has to remind Horatio not to be too reckless. She is good at finding solutions. She is also very brave and never hesitates to get involved in the action even when she thinks it might be better to call the police.

Ming is fiercely loyal and loves hanging out with Horatio and Wheels whenever her parents will let her. She also loves to read. Her biggest problem is trying to find reasons to be with her friends because her father thinks she should be home studying all the time.

Snowball is the neighbour’s cat. She first comes into the story when some of the chemicals in Horatio’s shed have turned her fur pink. For this reason Snowball doesn’t like Horatio very much. As the story continues Snowball becomes a more important character and even helps Horatio solve a major science problem. She is also responsible for the start of another frightening adventure for the three friends in the third book of The Entwhistle Experiment series.

Wheels is often found by Horatio’s side helping him both get into and then get out of tricky situations!

He zooms around on his turbo charged wheelchair with bright purple wheels, a security screen, oil-slick generator, smoke screen creator, golf ball expeller and flying capability. He loves electronic gadgets and sets up an alarm system in Horatio’s shed to warn them if someone is coming, and a booby trap to stop his sister, Pauline, going into his bedroom.

The turbo skates and pen phones he makes for Horatio and Ming prove very useful in saving them from disaster sometimes. Wheels is mature for his age because he has had to cope with the results of an accident in which his father died. He looks after his mother and Pauline, even though Pauline is sometimes a nuisance.
